“Life is like being in the 4th grade. You took birth here because you have certain work to do that involves the suffering you do, the kinds of situations you find yourself in. This is your curriculum. It’s not an error. Where you are now with all your neurosis and your problems; you’re sitting in just the right place. Imagine that.”

Imagine that…

There are certain quotes that just hit different. This is one of them for me. Every time I read it, I feel that hit. A chill down my spine. Because I’m reading something I know to be true, but don’t always live as true. It’s that reminder. Every time I see the words it’s not an error, there’s a quiver down my neck.

It’s like I have this north star for how I want to live… and then my humanity takes me out of it. I start thinking whatever’s happening in front of me is an error. A mistake. That it should be different, for whatever thousand reasons my mind can come up with.

But what if I could actually live from this perspective, that it’s not an error? That everything happening is perfectly designed for us? That we’ve each been placed in a completely customized curriculum, and this, whatever we’re experiencing, is our work to do.

It reminds me of Michael Singer’s teaching: you get to choose. Do you want to open, or close? That’s your choice. You get to choose whether you stay open.
