Good or bad, who knows, we'll see

One of my favorite parables

This is Wake Up with Saturday Soul, your weekly dose of inspiration to reset from the week and take you higher into your weekend. Because after all, it is your weekend. Let’s make sure no one takes it away from you.

A soulful message for today

There was once a farmer and his son who lived in a village.

One day, the farmer’s horse ran away. The neighbors came to express their concern: "Oh, that’s horrible. Such bad luck. How are you going to work the fields now?" The farmer looked back and replied: "Good luck, bad luck, who knows, we’ll see."

After a few days, his horse came back and brought four more horses with her. Now, the neighbors came with their joy: "Oh, how lucky! Now you can do even more work than before!” The farmer simply sat there and replied: "Good luck, bad luck, who knows, we’ll see."

The next week, as the farmer’s son was riding one of the wild horses, the son fell off the new horse and broke his leg. The neighbors came in sorrow again: "That’s such bad luck. Now that he’s injured, he can't help you around, too bad". And again, the farmer replied: "Good luck, bad luck, who knows, we’ll see."

Soon after, the news came that a war broke out and all the young men were being drafted to the army. The villagers were sad because they knew that many of the young men will not come back. But the farmer's son wouldn’t be drafted because of his broken leg. His neighbors came to the farmer again: "How lucky! Your son gets to stay! He will be safe". And of course… the farmer only had one response: "Good luck, bad luck, who knows, we’ll see."

This parable is one of my all-time favorites. As humans, we think we know why something is happening. We think we know the whole story. And through our limited lens of life, we respond with our excitement or agony, with our joy or remorse.

This farmer has a unique lens. A lens of trust and faith in the greater story, without being reactive to any of these seemingly significant events.

How can you gain the eyes of time?

How can you be more like the farmer this week?

A question to meditate on

Take a long, slow, deep breath in…

Where in my life could I have even more trust and faith that everything is perfectly designed for my spiritual growth?

Where could I let go of my grasp on control?

Where could I let go of my need for things to be exactly as I think is best?

Exhale.

Two quotes to take you higher

“The world exists as you perceive it. It is not what you see, but how you see it. It is not what you hear, but how you hear it. It is not what you feel, but how you feel it.”

Rumi

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

Carl Jung
